The holiday season is in full swing! The halls are decked, the gifts are purchased, and all you’re waiting for are the people you’re going to celebrate with. One of the wonderful things about being a New York homeowner is having the ability to host out-of-town guests for the holidays. Even if you only have a tiny bit of room to share, it can seriously amp up your holiday cheer to open your home to your loved ones. But let’s be honest – it can be a little stressful, too, especially if you’ve never done it before. That’s why we’re sharing our best tips for hosting overnight holiday guests this year. Follow these guidelines and your guests will think you’re a pro!

Clean and declutter

It should probably go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. Before guests arrive, clean and declutter your home. Pay close attention to high-traffic areas such as the bathroom and kitchen. Clear out any clutter that has accumulated and vacuum, dust, and empty the trash in each room.

Create a comfortable sleeping area

If you’ve got a guest bedroom, then most of the work is already done for you. But if you don’t, you can still carve out a comfortable sleeping area. Choose a quiet corner and invest in a quality air mattress. Once you’ve determined where guests will sleep, it’s time to cozy up the space. Use clean, fresh bedding, and have extra pillows and blankets at the ready. Have a light next to the bed for reading and an outlet nearby where they can charge their devices while they sleep. If your guest bedroom has a dresser or closet, then clear out some space so your guests can unpack their suitcases during their stay. Fresh flowers and a bottle or two of water also make a nice impression.

Get the bathroom ready

If you have more than one bathroom, then determine which one your guests will use. Stock the bathroom with plenty of clean towels and washcloths, basic toiletries such as shampoo and toothpaste, and a hairdryer. Have extras of other essentials on hand such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, lotion, cotton swabs, feminine hygiene products, and contact solution.

Stock up on snacks

While the holiday meal is usually the star of the show, having plenty of snacks and drinks on hand is essential when hosting overnight guests. Have easy-to-make breakfast choices and coffee available so your guests can make their own. Stock your pantry with snacks such as chips, cookies, and other holiday goodies. Have a selection of drinks to choose from such as bottled water, seltzer, soda, and tea. If your guests are adults, then have some adult beverages as well such as beer or wine. Show your guests where they can find all the snacks and drinks and let them know they can help themselves at any time.
